The first recorded use of acupuncture in Europe occurred in 1810, more than 200 years ago. But its history goes back much further than that. A crude form of acupuncture was being practiced in China several thousand years ago, and acupuncture as we would recognise it today first appeared on the scene during the Ming Dynasty, some 600 years ago. Acupuncture is a primary or complementary therapy that alleviates myriad health conditions by restoring balance to the body’s energy flow, or “qi”.
In the West, acupuncture is commonly used to alleviate pain associated with injury or medical conditions such as cancer. As many cancer treatments also produce pain, cancer patients will use acupuncture to help reduce it. But acupuncture is more than just a non-pharmaceutical pain reliever. It is often used to treat those with autoimmune deficiencies, digestive problems, infertility, allergies and more.
