    ANP Internationally acknowledged as voice of UK Naturopathy

    The ANP’s was internationally acknowledged as the UK Authority on Natural at a EU conference on Naturopathy.

    The ANP’s influence and profile on UK’s national health is undeniable as it joins the European Parliament in Brussels to promote Naturopathy.

    Now 3,000 members strong, ANP’s mission is further reflected in its international efforts and influence to represent the voice of UK practitioners at the European Parliament. President of the ANP, Leyla El Moudden was invited to join and give a speech at the SALUS Conference that focused on health promotion". This European conference was organized to highlight health promotion as a pillar of a sustainable health bringing together naturopaths (Italian, European and global) and educational directors of naturopathy schools at European level bringing significant experiences of integration of Complementary and Traditional Medicine (CTM) within European health systems or in the academic world

    Leyla El Moudden was invited to give a speech on behalf of UK naturopaths during which she shared the powerful message of raising awareness of the important role of being a practitioner contributing to national health. Her messaged was a call to all European organisations to join forces to promote Naturopathy.  Some of her words resonated strongly with various groups:  “ the ANP aims to support you as a practitioner, whilst reaching out to actual real people – people who are still in that sick stage… awareness raising is about reaching as many people as possible to start that same journey that we have been on – to challenge the orthodox, to try something kinder, gentler and still more effective and to demand that the information they need to help themselves get better”.

    ANP’s role on the European Platform is a symbol of what is to come in the near future and the impact of Natural Health on National health. The final outcome of the conference was a call to all present at the conference was to produce and collate outcomes research in order to join forces to promote Naturopathy.

    ANP was delighted to host noted Immunologist, Geneticist and Published Author Peter H. Kay for a workshop on Nutrition, Genetics and Cancer.

    Peter H. Kay began the day by addressing practitioners with a message on the importance of engaging with clients who approach them with a diagnosis of Cancer: “You [practitioners] are so important. You are perfectly placed to give real, life-changing advice and information to patients. You have the time, the knowledge and the opportunity to positive affect the trajectory of their experience and I cannot express enough how important it is that you engage with these topics and get out there and help people.”

    This talk was organised by the ANP in response to a growing number of enquiries from Nutritional Therapy and Herbal members. The number of people seeking advice from practitioners is rising. Like many conditions and treatments, dietary and lifestyle support from a practitioner is of immense value to the suffering person.

    As the Cancer landscape changes and develops, the need for constantly updated training and information for nutrition professionals’ increase. In order to support practitioners and their clients, the ANP has organised a series of talks from field leaders in Nutrition and Cancer to deliver training.

    The view that Nature is a living being is found in almost all pre-technological cultures throughout the word. It is usually associated with pre-modern religions and people such as Native American Indians that live close to the land.  This view of Nature as being a living entity was maintained until Sir Francis Bacon introduced the theory that the natural world was essentially a machine without a soul – an object to be manipulated, forced, and twisted.  Traditional Western Herbal Medicine is an approach that is not mechanistic but takes into account these additional dimensions of Nature as something that is whole, living and intelligent…..

    In the West the doctrine of the Living Nature was associated with the pagan tradition of Platonic, Aristotelian, Neo-Platonic, and Hermetic philosophy. Plato taught that the entire material world was but a reflection of a spiritual world. Aristotle pictured a world tied together in a great chain of being from God to Nature. These perspectives were incorporated into medieval Christianity, which maintained that Nature was a living entity and that the things of Nature embodied wisdom and spiritual teachings. Eventually, Sir Frances Bacon introduced the theory that the natural world was essentially a machine without a soul. It was an object which could be manipulated, forced and twisted to reveal its secrets.  The investigator, meanwhile, would be an objective scientist who abolished all subjective faculties from his or her scientific personality, including spirit or soul. Bacon separated God from Nature. God had no rulership or expression in Nature and Nature had no relationship to God. 

    The scientists of the preceding centuries had not automatically separated Nature from sentiment, soul, and spirit. It has been shown that even the anatomical drawings of Andreas Vesalius, which dissected the body and laid Nature bare, were designed according to classical concepts about the residences of the soul and spirit in the human being. His approach precedes from the whole to the parts, the opposite of the modern method. Leonardo da Vinci, whose “Vitruvian Man” is taken as the symbol of the scientific revolution, also attempted to fit his dissections and anatomical knowledge into classical categories representing a spiritual view of the world. Indeed, the “Vitruvian Man” with his arms stretched forth within a circle and a square is so appealing partly because it infers a deeper, mythological context behind human nature. J. W. Goethe, living after the Baconian revolution, attempted to re-instill the subjective element into scientific consideration alongside the objective approach.

    The most comprehensive doctrine of knowledge based on Nature in Western culture is found in the work of the sixteenth century alchemist and physician, Paracelsus. He attempted to build a science that was entirely based upon the idea that Nature was alive and ensouled. He experienced the internal reality of the Living Nature and drew his insights from that experience. Thus, he taught that there was an inherent way of knowing Nature and natural processes which was revealed where there was sympathy between the investigator and the subject, the scientist and Nature. This knowledge grew out of unity with Nature, rather than alienation. He called this way of knowing the “Light of Nature” (lumen natrae). Paracelsian philosophy was names “Naturgewissenshaften” in German, that is to say, “the Wisdom of Nature” or, in Latin, Natura Sophia.

    The twentieth century finally demonstrated that science, separated from soul and spirit, could create human monstrosities, like the Nazi eugenics programs or experimentation on concentration camp inmates, destroy natural resources, and threaten the entire plant. This has caused a backlash against scientific mechanism, and yet, the machine still churns on and we find ourselves, in medicine for example, still heretical for advocating a link between spirit and body.

    The curriculum of the Institute of Traditional Western Herbalism represents an attempt to teach a natural science herbalism based on a spiritual view of Nature. It is therefore based on the Natura Sophia approach. The utilisation of the subjective faculties, as well as the objective, makes our endeavour more difficult but then, life is more difficult than the simplistic model utilised in conventional science.

    “I am more radical today, than I was 40 years ago”, says Dr Pizzorno in an interview for Integrative Therapeutics.  “The more you look at the research, the more you see that not only is medicine not helping people get better, in many instances it is actually making them worse”.

    Dr Pizzorno is one of the world’s leading authorities on integrative medicine and life-long advocate of natural medicine and Naturopathic principles.  He founded the now famous Bastyr University which, under his leadership, became the first fully accredited, multidisciplinary university of natural medicine and the first NIH-funded centre for alternative medicine research. From 1996 to 2002, he served on the Seattle/King County Board of Health and in 1996 was a founding board member of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. He served as chairman of the American Public Health Association SPIG on CAM from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, he joined the Scientific Review Board of the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation and the Institute for Functional Medicine Board of Directors (for which he now serves as chairman). In 2002, he became the founding editor of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal, the most widely distributed peer-reviewed journal in the field. He has been a licensed Naturopathic Physician in Washington State since 1975. He was appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Bush Junior  to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee.

     “Modern medicine does miraculous things and we need it”, he says.  “If you have a car crash, a systemic infection, an acute life threatening situation you need a doctor and not a Naturopath. But if you have a long term chronic ailment, it’s the Naturopath that is going to help you get better, and the majority of disease and sickness we see today is long term, chronic and preventable.” 

    Dr Pizzorno’s most recent research has been on the subject of toxins, toxic exposure and detoxification. He argues that current research which begins on mice trials does not provide reliable information. “Mice are commonly used to indicate what determines safe and dangerous levels of exposure to a toxin” he says. “These mice trials are unreliable because mice are scavenger creatures. They have extremely efficient livers which enable them to detoxify at a much higher rate than humans”. In addition, Dr Pizzorno explains that scientific trials often use one toxin at a time which does not accurately mirror the human experience.  “Now we know that not only is the toxin exposure of great significance to human health, but so, too, are the chemical reactions that multiple toxins have. It is this this continual exposure to environmental toxins that is creating and sustaining chronic disease”.

    Dr Pizzorno will be lecturing at the first day of the ANP Naturopathic Summit, where he will present his latest research findings on toxins, toxicity and detoxification, particularly DDT, PCP, organophosphate pesticides, phthalates, heavy metals and more.

    David Tredinnick MP and Leyla Moudden, ANPChanging health needs requires different approach, says new report by David Tredinnick, Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Integrative Healthcare. 

    In 70 years of the NHS patients’ health needs have changed. Growing numbers of people suffering from long-term illnesses pose significant threats to the future sustainability of the NHS, a new report released by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Integrated Healthcare warns.

    MPs urge the NHS to embrace complementary, traditional and natural medicine to ease the mounting burden on service provision.

    The report says that the rising costs to the health system require a whole person approach to health delivery which focuses on prevention and tackles the root cause of illness.

    More patients suffer from multimorbidity (suffering from 2 or more long-term health conditions) than ever before, with the number of people in England with one or more long-term condition projected to increase to around 18 million by 2025.

    A staggering 70% of total health expenditure on health and care in England is associated with treating the 30% of the population with one long-term condition or more.

    The result of these complex health conditions is the growing problem of polypharmacy (the use of several drugs at the same time).

    This is perhaps the biggest threat to the future economic viability of the NHS, with increasing costs of pharmaceutical drugs needed to treat patients with multiple illnesses, coupled with largely unknown effects of the long-term use of these drugs in combination.

    The PGIH report argues that Government needs to devise a strategy to fully assess the degree of drug interactions, determine the long-term health effects on patients, and arrest the trend of over medicating the population.

    A significant part of this strategy is to treat patients as whole persons, with individual needs, rather than with a variety of illnesses that are treated separately.

    This strategy should make greater use of natural, traditional and complementary therapies, which are widely used for a variety of conditions. There is a huge under-utilised resource of therapists which could work in collaboration with conventional medicine to improve patient outcomes and ease the burden on the NHS.

    Modern medicine has been very effective in tackling many of the health conditions we face today. However, there are areas, often called Effectiveness Gaps (EGs), where available treatments in modern clinical practice are not fully effective.

    Musculoskeletal problems are commonly regarded as being affected by EGs. Depression, eczema, allergies, chronic pain, and irritable bowel syndrome are also frequently mentioned.

    For these types of conditions a different approach is needed, one which does not involve giving more and more costly but ineffective drugs.

    David Tredinnick MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group which produced the report, insisted that the current approach being taken by the Government is unsustainable for the long-term future of the country.

    “Despite positive signs that ministers are proving open to change, words must translate into reality. For some time our treasured NHS has faced threats to its financial sustainability and to common trust in the system.”

    “Multimorbidity is more apparent now in the UK than at any time in our recent history. As a trend it threatens to swamp a struggling NHS, but the good news is that many self-limiting conditions can be treated at home with the most minimal of expert intervention.”

    “Other European governments facing similar challenges have considered the benefits of exploring complementary, traditional and natural medicines. If we are to hand on our most invaluable institution to future generations, so should we.”

    The ANP was delighted to note that Matt Hancock’s view for the National Health System is prevention focused.

    ANP request that Mr Hancock to not forget or exclude the very powerful impacts of good nutrition, behaviours and herbs that can change the work that can be implemented before diagnosis. 

    ANP is concerned that there is the hint of a potential over reliance on technology to do the work of health. Early diagnosis via technology is extremely welcomed, particularly if it is non invasive and painless. 

    Prevention means that diagnosis (early or otherwise) should not be needed, and the need for medical intervention is radically reduced. As a nation we now collectively accept that it is better to not smoke, for example, than to smoke, better to brush your teeth and avoid tooth decay, than to not. It is also better to prevent obesity, diabetes and other preventable health conditions than to not, to facilitate that prevention with the right services and information than to not. 

    ANP is very happy to facilitate further discussion and ideas with any organisation or group who would like to learn more about the powerful impact of foods and herbs on health.

    A lot of people today, especially older people who are both more likely to be sick and are often more concerned about their health, use natural herbs and supplements as well as drugs they’ve been prescribed by their doctor. It’s therefore entirely reasonable that scientists should see what might be going on in terms of any untoward herb-drug or supplement-drug interactions. Or even supplement-herb interactions.

    This week a a study by the University of Hertfordshire attempted to shine a light on this issue. Sadly, in our view, it does quite the opposite. And we’re concerned it might do more harm than good.

    It’s already triggered reactions from the media warning people not to mix herbs or supplements with drugs.

    The essence of our concern is this: The study only included 155 responses out of 400 questionnaires sent out to patients on one or more prescription meds in two GP practices. One involved mainly white, older people in a rural village in Essex, the other came from a North London, urban practice with a larger black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) population. The questionnaires usefully collected information on what herbs, supplements and meds the respondents were on. And while there is a possibility of negative drug interactions in a small number of the respondents (16 of 155), there wasn’t enough information to indicate what doses were involved. More to the point, the abstract wrongly states that 32.6% of the participants were at risk of potential adverse effects – when in actual fact it was 32.6% only of 33.6% of the participants who concurrently consumed herbal medicine products and food supplements with prescription medicines. That’s 16 potentially at risk of drug interactions are therefore just 10% of the participants, not 32.6% as suggested. This misrepresentation has been amplified through the media – and we’ve written to the journal, British Journal of General Practice, to try to get the error corrected.

    What’s more, there’s no suggestion that the herbal medicines or food supplements might be providing benefits or filling nutritional gaps. That’s something of an oversight when you check out the latest UK dietary surveys that show that significant numbers of the population are deficient even to the standards of the lowly lower reference nutrient intakes (LRNIs).

    The ability of people to manage their own health is a very important part of trying to help our society to shift from a disease-focused society that pops pills (synthetic or natural) after it’s generally too late – to one that’s fully engaged in health creation. That’s what our sustainability blueprint is about. So we’re somewhat dismayed to see this misconstrued University of Hertfordshire study used as a mechanism to tell the British public that they shouldn’t take food supplements unless a trained health professional advises them to do so.

    And what about those who want to use natural methods of health – and who can’t afford to see a private practitioner with expertise with herbs or supplements? Is self-care by natural means off the menu? Should anyone who can’t see a private natural health professional be limited only to drugs prescribed by their GP? We think not.

    Vitamin supplements – rebutting fake


    We all know the theory that we should be able to get everything we need from our food. Evolution tells us this must be the case. The much more relevant question, however, is: do most of us actually get everything we need from our food?

    In recent news Sian Williams, the presenter, journalist and breast cancer survivor on UK ITV’s ‘Save Money: Good Health’, stopped taking supplements after a blood test showed the vitamins weren’t making a difference. Williams, along with a group of pensioners from Eastbourne, were asked as part of the TV programme to give up their supplements for a total of six weeks. Despite most of them ‘feeling unwell’ during this short period, the big reveal was a scientific let down. Everybody’s tested vitamin levels were within the ‘normal’ range. This left many questions: What did the programmme’s scientific advisors consider normal? How do these normal ranges differ, if at all, from ‘optimal’ ranges? What was the nature of the blood tests performed for each nutrient (e.g. plasma, erythrocytes)? Why didn’t they ask the participants how they felt?

    The fact is, this TV programme signalled the trigger for plenty of vitamin bashing news in recent days. Dr Potter from The Times even commented that vitamin supplement takers were “among the healthiest in society“. Surely that doesn’t mean they’re either worthless or dangerous, Dr Potter? Expensive wee stories, like that in the Daily Mail, were naturally par for the course.

    But food supplements faced a double whammy of attacks. They received further bad press after publication of a peer reviewed paper that ostensibly revealed the “hidden dangers” of food supplements. In actual fact, the story was spun out to the vitamin bashers in the media when actually it’s a non-issue for reputable companies, manufacturers and contract manufacturers in the UK and through most of Europe who adhere to tight quality control standards. As our founder, Rob Verkerk PhD told Nutraingredients this week, it is an issue for a very small number of imported products, most of which are sold via the Internet and produced by cowboy operators.

    How much do we need?

    There are four main ways to find out if someone is getting enough of a particular micronutrient. These are:

    1. Blood tests: Measuring levels in particular blood compartments and comparing the results for specific vitamins or minerals with reference ranges (which can themselves vary).
    2. Functional testing: Using a range of clinical tests, such as those widely used in functional medicine or clinical nutrition, that assess specific key functions within the body that are mediated by micronutrients. Such testing will be more likely to take into account individual needs, especially where these are significantly higher (or lower) than the average person.
    3. Evaluating health status, function and resilience of an individual. This in essence is using a more objective approach to assessing how someone feels, especially after changing their dietary patterns. Most people benefit from having a qualified healthcare professional in a relevant discipline or modality undertaking the assessment and then offering suggestions, the effects of which are monitored over time.
    4. Comparing dietary intakes against reference values. These reference values might be Estimated Average Requirements (EARs), Dietary Reference Intakes – or even labelling Nutrient Reference Values (what used to be called Recommended Daily Allowances or RDAs) in diets that might be regarded by nutritional experts as ‘healthy diets’. However, these reference values don’t cover optimal intakes. To establish optimal levels of intake, it’s often useful to look at what might be consumed when considering dietary patterns that nutritionists would agree are associated with long, healthy lives.

    As it happens, we published a peer-reviewed paper in 2010 that critiqued the EU’s proposed approach to establishing maximum permitted levels of vitamin and mineral food supplements. In the paper, Dr Rob Verkerk took the UK’s healthy eating guidelines and calculated vitamin and mineral intakes for ‘a typical day of healthy eating’, drawing the vitamin and mineral contents from the very comprehensive data in the USDA Nutrient Reference Database.

    What we’ve done in Figure 1 below is compare these optimal intakes, with the labelling reference value (EU Nutrient Reference Values or NRVs that you find on food labels) and the amounts of selected vitamins and minerals actually being consumed by the average adult in the UK (based on the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey or NDNS).

    We separated the magnesium data because the actual intakes in milligrams per day were so much more than the other micronutrients.

    The results reveal a shocking discrepancy between actual amounts of selected vitamins and minerals consumed and the optimal amounts, as found in a healthy day of eating. The intakes only look acceptable when you compare actual intakes with labelling reference values – which for years – clinical nutritionists, functional medicine practitioners and nutritional therapists have argued are far from optimal!

    We’ve done a similar thing with US data. We’ve taken actual data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and then compared these with the labelling ‘daily values’ and again, with the same optimal intakes we determined from a typical day of healthy eating using micronutrient contents in the USDA Nutrient Reference Database (see Fig 2).

    The results were equally shocking! Once again actual intakes are similar to the daily values, but far from the optimal levels recommended by clinical nutritionists, functional medicine practitioners and nutritional therapists! In other words people are not achieving the recommended levels of nutrients in their daily diets, let alone consuming enough to promote optimal health.

    The differences in actual intake, recommended intake and optimal intake levels for magnesium for both the UK and US were startling (Figures 1B and 2B). Magnesium is a vital mineral used by every organ in the body, especially the heart, muscles, kidneys and gut. Deficiency in magnesium is powerfully associated with increased risk of the number one cause of death worldwide, cardiovascular heart disease. Magnesium helps to activate enzymes, contributes to energy production as well as helping to regulate levels of calcium, copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D amongst other nutrients in the body. People eating a Western-style diet, those drinking too much coffee, fizzy drinks or alcohol or suffering prolonged stress or engaged in intensive physical activity or exercise, have much higher requirements for magnesium, so the low levels shown in the charts should be a real cause for concern.

    A lot of people simply don’t have the time, money or inclination to eat an optimal ‘healthy’ diet, day in and day out.

    We know from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey that only a third of the population are achieving the five-a-day fruit and vegetable target. Even the dietician on ‘Save Money: Good Health’ pointed out the need for vitamin D supplementation, particularly in view of the increasing cases of rickets worldwide.

    Due to over-farming, monocultures and the intensive use of pesticides, the soil in which our food is grown has become depleted of minerals. Fruit and vegetables by the end of the 20thcentury likely contained an average of 20% fewer minerals than they did in the 1930s. In some cases, the losses over this period may have been as high as 70%. Further depletion occurs owing to long post-harvest intervals, food storage systems and food processing.  It is also evident that our nutritional requirements may be increasing owing to the burden of environmental toxins to which we’re exposed, including air and water pollutants, solvents, cleaners, plastics and moulds.

    Who needs these supplements?

    We are not just talking about vitamins and minerals, people may need to supplement protein, essential fatty acids, phytonutrients and nucleotides. Most of the meat that we consume is now grain fed, which is very low in antioxidants and fatty acids, and hardly anybody eats organ meats, a rich source of nucleotides, which have important effects on the growth and development of cells, particularly important for the health of our gut and immune system.

    The over-55’s age group are among the largest users of supplements. As we age, our need for nutrients increases due to a reduction in our ability to absorb them. Enzyme and hydrochloric acid production declines (i.e. hypochlorhydria) with age, making it difficult to break down and absorb nutrients from food. So-called ‘inflamm-ageing’ increases too. Older people are often on multiple medications (polypharmacy), which can also can interfere with this process. This means older people benefit from specific supplements in their most bioavailable form.

    Knowing somebody’s genetic makeup can indicate whether he or she would benefit from supplementation. For instance, adequate folate is essential for the fundamental process needed to create new DNA, RNA and cells (one-carbon metabolism).  Methylation is a vital process to ensure healthy DNA and gene expression which in turn are crucial determinants of our health. Under- or over-methylation can leave us susceptible to a range of health issues such as fatigue, poor cognitive function, reduced detoxification and chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Certain B vitamins, in particular folate, vitamins B12 and B6, along with zinc, magnesium, copper and zinc are key co-factors when it comes to maintaining healthy methylation and energy-yielding cycles in the body that are essential for all physiological, metabolic and immunological processes.

    In theory, getting all your nutrients from food is the ideal, but, for the vast majority, virtually impossible in practice. Whilst everybody should focus on consuming a diverse, nutrient-dense diet first and foremost, that’s rarely enough anymore and high quality supplementation with the right balance and range of nutrients are beneficial to most if optimal health is the goal.

    Call to action

    • Know your intake or your levels of micronutrients, especially if your health is less than par. Visit a functional medicine practitioner or nutritional therapist to understand better how your health status may be improved by changing your diet, your lifestyle and, potentially, providing appropriate supplementation.

    Position Statement: If you are a health professional then you may have become aware of a research publication from the University of Hertfordshire, suggesting that there are risks when supplementing vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies.

    The ANP do not think that supplements should only be taken following a consultation with a health professional, but that instead – possible dangers and contraindications for those on medications should be highlighted to people at the time of prescribing.

    The ANP categorically rejects the idea that it is supplements, vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies be held responsible for adverse reactions, or that access to nutrients and herbal remedies should be limited or restricted.

    A better solution to mitigate any dangers would be for pharmaceutical companies to clearly outline and communicate dangers to their patients, including vitamin and mineral deficiencies, nutrient side effects and interactions on their drug inserts.

    It is absolutely the case that some medications will deplete the body of minerals, vitamins and important gut bacteria and in those instances the need for supplementation may be high and indeed life-changing. People who need supplementation for whatever reason should not be forced to see a health professional each and every time they need a supplement.

    If healthcare professionals are worried about herbal remedies or supplements, ANP is happy to provide practitioners, workshops and resources so that health professionals are better able to give important and valuable advice on nutrition and herbal medicine to all of their clients.

    ANP is open Monday to Friday, 9am till 5.30pm and happy to provide information to anyone who seeks it.
